Stephen Benedek
I enjoy painting the human face and figure, especially while involved in some sort of demanding activity, perhaps as a musician , acrobat , dancer. I try to demonstrate not only the model's physical appearance, but also his/her skills and interests , trials and achievements. I admire people who do difficult, but creative things.
Although the model will be carefully rendered , I sometimes use an abstract background in the image , integrating the representational with the non-representational. But the model comes first. The abstract background is meant only to enhance the beauty of the model.
I have experimented with watercolors , acrylics , and dry media in the past , but now I find oils most suitable for figurative painting.
I started doing visual art somewhat later in life. In my fifties ,I started taking excellent workshops , hosted by some of the best figurative artists and teachers in Canada. Even so , I am primarily self-trained.
I belong to the Willowdale Group of Artists, and have shown as part of their group shows. I have also won awards at these shows. I also participate at the annual show at the Toronto Botanical Gardens.
